In April 2019, Residents Forward partnered with TerraCycle to launch a cigarette butt recycling program in Port Washington.
We funded the installation of 3 receptacles near the LIRR station on Main Street.
Spectrum Designs collects the cigarette waste and sends it to TerraCycle, where it is recycled into plastic products.
This initiative is part of the Give a Litter Bit and Clean Green Main Street campaigns, which aim to reduce litter and protect local waterways.

The Pre-Turkey Trot Cleanup, hosted by residents Forward, is a community event to keep the Community Chest Trot route clean and litter-free.
Held before Thanksgiving, it brings together residents, scouts, clubs, and volunteers to clear sidewalks, pick up litter, and get the route ready for runners.

This is Port’s largest clean-up effort, bringing in over 100 residents to participate in helping to clean the streets and sidewalks of litter along Main Street and the surrounding areas.
This annual clean-up is a fun event that every age group participates in and typically takes place during Earth Day or within that same month.

The Clean Green Manorhaven initiative held at Manorhaven Village Hall, is our annual community clean-up event to keep local streets, trails, and waterways free of litter.
Volunteers work together to collect trash and separate recyclables, making a positive impact on the environment.
At the most recent event, participants collected enough waste to fill eight 4 gallon trash bags, ensuring proper disposal and recycling.

The DIY Clean-Up Station is a community project created in memory of Brett Friedberg, a dedicated advocate for climate action.
Designed by Marlene Friedberg with artwork by Michelle Shaun, these stations provide gloves and bags so anyone can pick up litter at any time.
The stations are both a memorial to Brett and an educational tool, promoting environmental care while honoring his commitment to sustainability and love for nature.
Murals

The PW Mural project promotes pride in Port Washington on the walls of Main Street and beyond.
By spotlighting the uniqueness of Port Washington – its history, citizenry, natural beauty, culture and diversity – this project aims to tell the story behind our incredible community.
Created by Port Washington artist Michelle Shaine, the Mural Project is an ongoing way to take unused wall space and turn it into art.

In 2018, Port Residents created “Remember the Unforgettable” Mural at the train station, which pays tribute to Port Washington’s military, police and fire service people who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Created in June 2018, The Painting History mural project, sponsored by Port Washington HEARTS, celebrates the town's history.
With support from Hearts founder Damon Gersh and artist Rachelle Krieger, the mural will be painted on the historic 1930s building that once housed Logans Seashell Bar and Grill. As a part of the project, the original sign will also be restored.

In 2021 – Residents Forward tasked the Students at Schreiber High School to create a mural signifying Unity and Diversity.
Olivia Platt, a rising senior, was the artist whose submission was selected. Lori Lee, a local artist, brought Olivia’s artwork to life and it is now it shines bright on the building as you enter school premises.

Education

Students learn to differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable resources and the connection between water, air, sun and soil.

We touch over 425 students in 2nd Grade with our free educational programming at all the elementary schools through our “Life Cycle of the Backpack'“ program. Students explore the connection between water, sun air and sun and soil. They also learn about renewable and non-renewable resources in a fun, easy to understand way from a Residents Forward educator who visits their classroom.

The Baxter’s Pond Study is a hands-on field trip for any third grader in Port elementary schools that wants to participate.
It is run in partnership with Alley Pond Environmental Center. Students visit Baxter's Pond in Port Washington to learn about its ecosystem and water quality. They explore the importance of recycling and reducing pollution and see how human actions affect local waterways. This trip teaches students how they can help protect aquatic environments.

Residents Forward conducts a fun filled Field Trip for all 5th Graders to the Bay Walk during school hours.
They learn about the origins of our drinking water and the aquifers. They take part in a hands-on activity illustrating how pollution gets into the aquifer from the roads and ground, how saltwater intrusion occurs, and how development affects rainwater recharge for the aquifer.
They come away with concrete ways they can help reduce water usage and preserve our waterways.

A new initiative we started in 2025 to bring the educational program to the youngest children in our town.
Educational Infrastructure

Easy to understand signs were created and added to our Bay Walk. They ensure all residents strolling along the walkway learn about; Long Island's aquifers, the importance of rain gardens, how pollution enters groundwater, how saltwater intrusion impacts drinking water and the cycle of water.

These fun, colorful signs were added to the tops of the picnic tables at the Bay Walk by Residents Forward in XXX.
They are used to encourage dialogue with parents and children who picnic there. The tabletops have useful information on Rewilding, Water, Organic Lawn Care, and Recycling in an easy to understand format.

This fact filled exhibit along the Bay Walk was created to help visitors understand how long it take for Marine Debris items to decompose in our bay.
It serves as a big deterrent to help reduce littering by our waterways and along our roads.
The “Trash Talkin’” Exhibit was developed in 2013 after a post-Sandy clean up with Schreiber Tree Hugger Students and Guggenheim 5th Graders along with the Town of North Hempstead.

The Youth Climate summit provides one hundred Middle and High School Port Washington students the opportunity to work with environmental leaders, attend workshops, and develop their own Climate Action Projects in a free one-day workshop.
Students are encouraged to work through the following year to develop their own Climate Action Projects and work on real world sustainability projects.
Parks & Gardens

Every May through October, we strategically place beautiful planters throughout the town, to brighten our streets and enhance our town’s charm.
In 2025 we increased our planters from 13 to 20 – adding both a spring/summer planting…

Blumenfeld Family Park provides a fun and relaxing space for residents and visitors alike. The gardens are filled with vibrant flowers, and parents can enjoy comfortable seating areas overlooking the playground. Families especially love the water spray pads during the summer season.

The Climate Awareness Garden Program, open to 1st–12th graders, gives elementary students the chance to learn about gardening, the food system, and climate change. (With guidance from middle and high school mentors).
This program was developed from the Climate Action Projects through our Youth Climate Summit.

The North Hempstead Beach Trail is an initiative by Residents Forward to improve public access to nature and promote sustainable recreation.
The project plans to create a shoreline trail from Hempstead Harbor Park to Roselyn, offering a space for walking, biking, and outdoor activities.
This effort is part of the Residents Forwards Land use and Planning initiative, which works with community members, local officials, and stakeholders to support responsible development.
The goal is to protect natural spaces, improve public access, and ensure long term environmental sustainability.

Transportation

The community friendly shuttle Bus is available to residents and visitors from the Soundview section of town and offers a reliable and affordable way for commuters to get to the Long Island Train Station.
Residents helped to develop this imitative along with Port Washington North, NICE and TONH.
This eco-friendly option aims to provide a reliable source of transportation that helps solve parking issues and reduces traffic during peak times of the day.

The Daly Walk to School Event is an annual effort to promote sustainable transportation and community spirit for National Car-Free Day.
Organized by Daly Elementary School HSA and Residents Forward, the event invites students, parents, and local groups to walk to school from designated locations.
Along the way, participants can enjoy decorated walking routes, refreshments, and activities like temporary tattoos for kids and coffee for adults.
With support from the Sands Point Police and United Methodist Church, the event is a safe, fun, and eco-friendly way for families to start their day while encouraging greener commuting habits.

Residents Forward with the Town of North Hempstead launched “Let’s Walk PW,” in 2021 in an effort to boost local businesses and encourage residents and visitors to walk rather than drive.
Local Artist, Michelle Shaine, designed a series of permanent signs throughout town which shows how far of a walk it is to various businesses and attractions.
This program has helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhanced people’s overall health and wellness.

The Art Walk is part of the larger Let’s Walk PW campaign, an initiative by Residents Forward to promote walkability, sustainability, and vibrancy in Port Washington. Modeled in the spirit of beloved community events like Port Promenade, Port Holiday Magic and Party in the Park, the Art Walk aims to become a cornerstone celebration of local artistry in all forms – from the streets to the stores.
Events

In 2024, Residents Forward cosponsored the Oyster Program with the TONH and Cornell Cooperative.
Along with over 50 local volunteers, we grew over 200,000 oysters which filters over 660,000 gallons of our towns water!
We have increased our efforts for 2025 and will continue this amazing project with even more cages in the Spring. Plus we are adding a new location – Morgan’s Dock in Manorhaven.

Residents Forward has expanded their partnership with the TONH and Cornell Cooperative, by creating the 2nd Oyster Gardens in Port Washington. (The first one is adjacent to the Town dock) By having our community members participate in this program, our goal is to increase the awareness about factors affecting our water and provide information about the important role oysters play in the environment.

Residents Forward was one of the founding organizations of this fun, seasonal event bringing 3 days of shopping, entertainment and Holiday spirit to the town.
Now, as a supporting organizer, we participate each year by tabling an event that enhances the quality of the programming.
