Beautification

We envision a more beautiful Port Washington

For nearly 60 years, we have enhanced Port’s natural beauty, created spaces and programs to keep Port clean, green and beautiful. From the founding of Blumenfeld Park, to the planting of trees to enhance Port’s tree canopy, the Port Mural Project, 6 public gardens and 15 planters all along Main Street. We encourage residents to Give a Litter Bit with Clean Up events, DIY Clean up Stations and Cigarette Receptacles to keep Port Washington beautiful.

Litter

As a waterfront community, litter on our streets can run off into the Bay, tainting our water and harming our marine life. Litter can lead to long-term consequences for our community and our environment. We encourage residents to Give a Litter Bit and build community partnerships, engage youth leadership, and install simple infrastructure to reduce litter and protect our local environment.

Adopt a Planter

Residents Forward’s Planter Program brings vibrant pops of color, nature and life to Main Street, brightening the district from May through October.

We invite residents to adopt a planter—for your community, family, business, or in honor of someone you love.

Cigarette Butt Collection & Recycling Program

Data collected at RF’s Clean Green events showed cigarette butts are the most commonly littered item. The butts land on our streets, storm drains, and waterways. To mitigate this issue, we introduced the Cigarette Butt Collection & Recycling Program on Main Street.

Cigarette receptacles are placed in high-litter areas along Main Street where smokers can responsibly dispose of their cigarette butts instead of dropping them on the ground. The butts are collected, sorted, logged and sent to Terracycle for recycling.

This program is run in partnership with The Nicholas Navigators and Terracycle

  • The program is supported by the dedicated youth volunteers of the Nicholas Navigators, who routinely check and empty the receptacles.

The collected cigarette butts are brought to the Residents Forward office, logged into a tracking spreadsheet and prepared for shipment.

  • All collected material is then sent to TerraCycle, a global leader in hard-to-recycle waste solutions.

Through their specialized recycling process, the cigarette waste is processed and transformed into new plastic products, ensuring the material stays out of landfills and waterways.

The Port Washington Mural Project

The Port Washington Mural Project transforms everyday spaces into vibrant expressions of community pride. From Main Street to unexpected corners throughout our peninsula, these murals celebrate what makes Port Washington unique—its history, natural beauty, culture, and the people who call it home.

Created by local artists, for the community, the project turns underutilized walls into meaningful public art that invites connection, sparks conversation, and enhances the walkability and visual identity of our downtown and neighborhoods.
