YCAPS

Post-Summit, students embark on developing and implementing their Climate Action Projects (YCAPS).

YCAPs gives students:

  • a platform for youth leadership

  • résumé-building, real-world experience

  • confidence and communication skills

  • a deeper connection to their community

  • an opportunity to make real-world impact

RF’s program guides and supports the YCAP students throughout the research, development and implementation process.

    • The Climate Awareness Garden: Students from grades 7-12 collaboratively planned, grew, and maintained a “square foot” vegetable garden at Schreiber High School, donating to food insecure, combining education with environmental action.

    • The Bus is For Us: A district-wide initiative provided 10 free rides on public buses for every student during Earth Month, reducing emissions and encouraging sustainable transportation.

    • Port Recycles: A comprehensive recycling curriculum being implemented across local schools, teaching students, educators, and administrators how to reduce waste effectively.

    • Food Scrap Recycling Pilot Program: Introduced at Salem Elementary, this project diverted waste and reduced methane emissions while teaching the value of composting.

    • Every Drop Counts is a student-led informational exhibit installed at Bay Walk Park about our drinking water, how our choices matter and water conservation.

    • Bag the Bag initiative to reduce plastic bag usage. Hannah Roth presented the group’s research results to county legislators in front of the Nassau County Legislature, to advocate for a countywide plastic bag fee, similar to that of neighboring Suffolk County. Her efforts were acknowledged as the recipient of the Curt Trinko Environmental Superstar Scholarship
